Your Side Gig and Your Resume

Updated: Jun 6, 2021

Do you have an extra job? If you do, you’re not alone. Over one-third of Americans now have a side hustle, and although earning extra money is a prime motivator for taking a second job, it’s not the only reason. Many people use their side hustle to develop their careers and help develop skills for their ambitions.

Why you should put your extra work on your resume

It may seem like having a second job wouldn’t be appealing to potential employers. But if you have a side gig and you’re not adding it to your resume, you may be cheating yourself by not sharing the valuable experience you’ve gained outside of your regular job.

A second job is also known as a side hustle, a slang word meaning to work hard. It’s a great term because having a side hustle shows that you’re an energetic, dedicated worker who will bring a lot of drive to their next job. Talking about your energy level, and the way you’ve balanced multiple priorities is very useful in job interviews.

Adding your side gig to your resume can give you the chance to show off the skills and experience you’ve developed. By including your side gig, you’ll have an opportunity to talk about why you’re well-positioned to be successful in the job you’re interviewing for and, discussing how you’ve been able to successfully manage working two jobs at the same time.

Of course, you don’t have to wait for the interview to show why your side gig makes you a good candidate for the position. Don’t lie, of course, but if the position involves say, training new employees and your side gig is tutoring a second language, be sure to include your experience with teaching and training.

To make a long story short, don’t discount your experience just because you got it while working at a second job.

How to add a side gig to your resume

When you’re adding a side gig to your resume, there are a couple of ways you can do it.

Chronological resume addition

One way to add your side gig to your resume is to list it as a job, like any other position included on your resume. This includes listing a job title, dates, and a few bullet points that are accurate but are also tailored to the job you’re interested in. This works well if your side gig meshes with your overall career development.

Additional skills section

Many side gigs aren’t going to match the rest of your resume. That includes extra jobs such as dog walking or working with a delivery company, like Instacart or Postmates. Even though these jobs aren’t strictly applicable for many corporate positions, the skills you’ve developed should still be included on your resume. For example, if you’ve worked with a delivery company, you’ve likely developed strong customer relations and communication skills. You’ve also developed great attention to detail, not to mention setting priorities and meeting goals.

Even though it’s no longer unusual to have a side gig, most people don’t include extra work on their resumes. By including your side hustle, you make yourself stand out from other job applicants. Including your side gig gives you a chance to further showcase your talent and your abilities, and it helps add to your candidate story.
