Finding Employees After COVID-19

COVID-19 hit our economy like a big truck, causing levels of unemployment not seen since the great depression. It’s reasonable to think that people would be eager to get back to work as soon as possible. Yet, everywhere you look, there are stories about businesses having difficulty attracting employees.

Today, it’s not enough to just hang the “Help Wanted” sign on the door. Employers have to go the extra mile to find the right people and to show that they’re great places to work.

So how do you do that?

Show that you Value Employee Health

On-going concerns about health and safety are a huge hurdle to getting employees back to work. People have to work for a living, but they don’t want to put themselves at risk. According to the US Census Bureau, 4.2 million Americans are currently not working because they fear getting, or spreading, the COVID virus.

Fortunately, we have multiple vaccines against COVID. Half of all Americans over the age of 18 have received at least one shot, and one-third are fully vaccinated. But, there’s still a long way to go until we can say that we’ve defeated COVID, and people are still concerned. An important step in getting people back to work is for companies to show that they value the safety of their employees. Continue your workplace safety policies, such as requiring mask usage, checking employee temperatures, and providing adequate social distancing. Don’t be afraid to mention your health policies in your job postings and on your webpage.

Revisit your compensation package

Offering more money has always been a very useful recruiting tactic. It’s especially effective now when so many families are dealing with bills related to the COVID pandemic and ongoing medical care.

But there’s more to compensation than salary. In the wake of the pandemic, employees have a new appreciation for benefits, and many employers are offering expanded benefits packages that go beyond health and 401k. Benefits like short and long-term disability as well as dependent care quickly come to mind when talking about expanded employee benefits. You should also look into revising your PTO policy to allow for employees who need to quarantine – your state government and the Federal government may provide additional tax incentives.

Continue your remote work policy

Before the pandemic, many companies considered working from home to be logistically impractical, so often, it was only offered as a negotiation tool. Times have changed, and one of the few good things to come out of the pandemic is the realization that employees don’t have to be in the office to get work done. As the pandemic weakens, allowing employees to continue to work from home even if they’re only there one or two days a week, will make your company more attractive as an employer.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

Recruiting has never been an easy job, particularly now, when we’re facing one of the most challenging staffing environments in decades. At a time like this, having a strong relationship with a staffing firm should be an important part of your recruiting plan.

A good staffing firm can be instrumental in finding the best employees quickly. They can do this by using their contacts to source candidates who aren’t actively looking for a new job and to use temp-to-perm arrangements so you can audition for new talent. A good staffing firm can also provide valuable market insight and information that you might not otherwise get.

We’re in a people crunch right now. Although the economy is coming back, finding talent is still a challenge. It’s important to be flexible, think outside the box, and listen to the thoughts and concerns of your potential employees. Finding the right people isn’t easy, but it can be very rewarding.
