Clues you Should Look for a New Job

Updated: Sep 19, 2021

Looking for a new job isn’t fun. In fact, it’s one of the most stressful tasks for employees in the business world today. It may not be fun, people are looking for (and finding) new jobs in record numbers after months in quarantine. And even more, well over fifty percent, according to Fast Company, are considering changing jobs.

Looking for a new job isn’t fun, but the benefits of a new position often outweigh the hassle of the search. Common wisdom says that changing your job is the best way of getting ahead quickly, and that’s not wrong. By changing employers, you can increase your pay and promotion opportunities. You may also improve your working environment.

Still, it can be difficult to know when the time is right to change jobs. So here are some flags to look for to let you know when it’s time to start looking.

The company has visible signs of financial problems

If your company is obviously having money trouble, that’s a huge red flag that it’s time to look for another employer. Watch out for things like hiring freezes, delayed (or canceled) projects, a suspension of raises and bonuses, and a sudden increase in closed-door meetings. When you see these signs, take it as a hint to brush off and update your resume. After all, it’s easier to find a new job when you’ve already got one.

Your work environment is toxic

Maybe your coworkers are jerks who rely on you to get the work done. Maybe your boss takes credit for every idea you have. Or maybe you just feel sick to your stomach every Sunday night when you think about going to work the next morning. If your job is making you miserable, it’s time to find a job that doesn’t. Life is too short, and there are too many opportunities to be miserable for 40+ hours a week.

There’s no room for advancement

Take a look at your company. What do you want to be doing in five years? Can you reach your goal at your current job? Do employees get promoted, or does the company only hire from outside? Having a career is like having a garden – you have to tend it to make it bloom. If there’s no room for advancement, it’s time to start looking for new opportunities beyond your current employer.

You catch yourself reading job postings

It’s not difficult to find job postings on the web, especially these days. Of course, it’s not difficult to simply scroll past job postings either. If you suddenly find yourself reading about new jobs, that may be a sign that something isn’t right about your current situation. Take a moment to have an honest conversation with yourself about where you are and where you’d like to be, and whether or not you can get there at your current job.

Your pay hasn’t kept up with your work duties and responsibilities

This is especially a problem for people who have been in the same role for more than a few years. Many people find that their employers don’t give them raises to match the market value of their skills and their jobs, let alone the voice of experience they bring to their team and the company. If you aren’t appreciated, maybe it’s time to find a new place that will appreciate you.

People often complain about their jobs and for good reason. There’s a reason it’s called “work” and not “fun”. But just because you’re paid for your efforts doesn’t mean you have to be miserable. If your job makes you unhappy, take a look at your other options. After all, nearly one-third of our lives are spent at work. Life’s too short to be unhappy at work.
