10 Must-Dos During a Job Interview for Candidates

Updated: Sep 19, 2021

Job interviews can be nerve-wracking for candidates. Fortify everything you have to offer a potential employer with some must-dos. Our list of ten will not only help you make a great first impression but will also boost your confidence, allowing you to relax and perform your best. Here is a list of the top things candidates can do to ensure their interview goes smoothly:

What to Wear:

Dress the part for your interview. Impress the interviewer and the rest of the company by wearing business attire either in the form of a suit, a professional-looking dress, or a pantsuit. Dress as if you already work there, and you’re arriving for a big meeting with the top decision-makers.

Yes, Bring Copies of Your Resume:

You most likely will interview with a team either as a whole or with each member individually. People are busy. Make it easy for them by providing another copy of your resume – even if you already sent one to their email address. Start solving problems right there in their office: “Here’s an extra copy of my resume. I can expand on my experience and skills for you.”

Do Your Homework:

Research the company with which you interview. Learn the history of the company, their vision and mission statements, and the backgrounds of the people who will interview you. Make use of their website, their social media platforms, and LinkedIn profiles – and then take notes.

Prep for the Test:

Prepare your answers in advance for common interview questions. You can find sample questions online. And in your answers, tell a story with a beginning, middle, and end. Not only will that make your answers easy to remember, but it will also make it easier for your interviewers to remember you and your stories. Practice in front of a mirror or while filming yourself with your phone for review.

Always on Time:

Arrive at least ten minutes before your interview. If you’re not familiar with the area, it may be a good idea to do a dry run ahead of time to ensure you’re familiar with parking or public transportation.

Work the Nonverbals:

Leverage all of your tools to your advantage. Maintain eye contact with the interviewer. Sit up straight with your shoulders back. Pay close attention and show interest in what the interviewer has to say.

Infuse Your Attitude with Positivity:

Bring optimistic energy to your speech and to your behavior. Put the best spin on your experience and skillset as possible without slipping into exaggeration.

Respect:

Be respectful and polite to everyone you interact with during the interview. You never know who has the ear of the decision-maker. Leave an impeccable impression on everyone involved. This is their only impression of you besides your initial resume.

Ask Questions:

During your interview prep, also prepare questions for your interviewer. And when you get the chance, show your interest in the company.

Thank You:

Write a thank you note to everyone who met with you during your interview process as soon as you depart the interview. To make it faster and easier, pre-address and stamp the envelopes ahead of time – yes! The old-fashioned way…pen on paper sent via the post office.
